This workshop explores the influence of performance on written text. Aspects of audience size, venue, and demographics will be discussed, as well as performance styles for particular song forms; for example, a protest song compared to a pop song or dance music.

How does music influence language? Metaphor is differentiated by the effect of accompanying music, and words sung or spoken out loud in performance are identified differently than those read silently as text.

Song styles will be demonstrated for workshop participants by poet, essayist, and singer-songwriter Joseph Maviglia, writer-in-residence at Historic Joy Kogawa House.

When: Thursday, November 8, 7:30 to 9:00pm
Where: Historic Joy Kogawa House, 1450 West 64th Avenue, Vancouver
Cost: By donation ($5 to $10 suggested)
