Guest post by Isabella Mori
For the next four weeks, I’ll be posting a few haiku once a week. Lots of people think of cherry blossoms when they think of haiku. I do, too, of course – but so much so that I’ve lost my taste for pretty cherry blossom haiku. The idea, then, is to post haiku that are a little rougher, darker. Feel free to comment with your own haiku, your thoughts, or suggestions for improvement!
cherry blossoms …
every street
bears a white man’s name
first sunny day
shirtless guy yells abuse
under the cherry tree
development permit
i’m afraid
for the old cherry tree
(A wave, too, to the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival).

I can see your point. If the world is dismal, a little bud may not soothe.
D.C. cherry blossoms
blood stains
are elsewhere
Thanks for your poem, Isabella. Very strong, your references to the street-names and the “development” permit. . . .
