and the return of gathering at the House.
Writer in Residence: Lindi Nolte
We are pleased to welcome Lindi Nolte as our Writer in Residence from March 7 to March 30. During her residency, Lindi will be developing new work while offering several opportunities for writers and readers to gather in thoughtful, creative community. All events will take place at Historic Joy Kogawa House, with online participation available via Zoom.
About Lindi
Lindi Nolte is a South African-Canadian spoken word poet, TEDx speaker, and creative writing educator. Active in Vancouver’s spoken word scene since 2014, she became Vancouver Grand Slam Champion in 2018.
Her debut collection Barefoot & Awestruck explores migration, nature, and healing, and in 2022 she served as Writer-in-Residence for the City of Richmond, mentoring writers and leading community workshops.
Writer’s Circle
When: Sunday, March 22 | 12:00–2:30pm

A supportive space for writers to share works in progress and receive gentle, constructive feedback.
The afternoon will include guided prompts and exercises designed to spark creativity and push boundaries, alongside discussion of craft, process, and sustaining a writing practice.
Participants will have the opportunity to connect with fellow writers in an intimate setting.
The Art of Spoken Word: Voice & Embodiment
When: Thursday, March 26 | 7:00–8:30pm
Where: Historic Joy Kogawa House, in-person and online
Tickets: $15
An interactive workshop exploring how voice, body, and presence shape performance.
Through practical exercises, participants will experiment with bringing text to life and accessing emotional authenticity in delivery.
The session includes time to craft and share original pieces, with reflection on building confidence and connection with an audience.
Poetry Reading: An Evening of Words and Connection
When: Saturday, March 28 | 2:00–4:00pm
Where: Historic Joy Kogawa House, in-person and online
Tickets: by donation
A curated reading of new work exploring themes of motherhood, identity, and personal transformation.
This intimate gathering will include space for reflection, conversation, and shared experience.
Lindi will also host our Tuesday Night Writing Group during her residency, as well as Poetry Jam on March 19.

Historic Joy Kogawa House is pleased to present a past writer-in-residence Joseph Maviglia who will be presenting a house concert as part of our April Poetry Month programming. Joseph will share poems and writings from his publication, In A Cage of Sunlight. In addition, he’ll be performing music and songs for a beautiful and intimate gathering.

About Joseph
Joseph Maviglia is a Toronto-based performance poet, musician, and essayist known for blending song and spoken word in powerful live performances.
His career has included international tours and appearances at venues such as WOMAD, the National Gallery of Canada, and New York’s Nuyorican Poets’ Café.
His poetry, music, and essays have been widely published and performed.
